In the mid 1800’s Evesham Township was home to a large enclave of Free Blacks and fugitive enslaved people. Visit our table at the Juneteenth Celebration to learn where it was and some of the families who lived there. An abandoned cemetery that was part of the community has recently been acquired by the Township to be protected and preserved.
The Milford/Kenilworth Community – Evesham’s Forgotten Black History
During the mid 1800’s the area now known as Kresson/Kenilworth was home to 40 or more families of Free Blacks and runaway enslaved people. Historian Paul Schopp, Assistant Director of the South Jersey Culture and History Center at Stockton University, will do a presentation on the history of this forgotten community and its role in the Underground Railroad in Evesham Township.
